Youth Food Policy Council
Youth Food Policy Council is a collaborative effort between La Semilla and Colonias Development Council where youth learn to identify barriers that limit access to healthy, affordable, and culturally appropriate foods.
Ten youth from several rural communities in Doña Ana County participate in weekly lessons to explore the local food system, food policy issues, media literacy (food advertising), direct growing experiences, and visits to various sites representing different aspects of the food chain (from food banks to farmers markets and local farms). Youth also engage with community activists, university professors, and public officials to learn about sustainability, farm workers’ rights, and explore how change can be made through policy and advocacy.
